My name is Ronny Bonner and I’ve used drugs for over 30 years, I’ve stole from my family members and love ones for the majority of this time. I’ve put my mother and wife through a living hell and they suffered a great deal with my drug use.

I have three children with my wife and they also have suffered. I just could not stop using drugs. I just never thought I could stop. I’ve been through several treatment centers for my addiction and have over the last 20 years have been to The Hale Foundation several times only to start using drugs again when I left the program. The longest amount of time a had clean was 5 years. That was in the past when I came to The Hale Foundation and began working the 12 steps. I went to meetings on a regular basis and work with a lot of people. I lost my mother in 2004, stayed clean for a short while after that and started everything all over again. I stayed out using drugs for 5 years. This time was the worst I’ve ever had in my entire life, I was very close to death and I knew it, I could not stop. I often would think about killing myself because I could not keep living this way.
With the help of my wife and people that loved me, I got another chance at The Hale Foundation. I needed to do something different from what I’ve done before, but I didn’t know who to go about that. So, for the first time in my life, I follow the direction The Hale Foundation gave me.
I got someone to work with me and walk me through the 12-Steps, I went to meetings everyday and I got a chance to work with other men coming into the program for the first time.

As a result, my life has changed in a way I never realized possible. I live and enjoy life today! I started this path of recovery in May of 2010 and it has been the greatest experience of my life. I love my life today! I have a great relationship with my wife and children. I come back to The Hale Foundation today to give back and help other men like myself that are starting on the recovery journey.

I thank God for The Hale Foundation and the people who work there.

I got to the point where I needed a second chance, third chance and a forth chance. The Hale Foundation never gave up on me. They gave me another chance by helping me take responsibility for my life and renew my relationship with God.

I started using drugs and alcohol when I was 12 years old and struggled with them for the next 20 years. Early on I spent time in jail and rehab but was too young to see the direction I was going. After I got married and my children were born I put down the hard drugs and material success became my main focus. Life was good; we appeared to have it all.

Over the next few years my opiate addiction took control. I lost everything, my job, my car, my home and my relationship with my wife and children. I was bankrupt, not only financially but spiritually, mentally and physically. I was tired of living a lie, a double life and tired of running. I ended up in an AA meeting and ran into an old friend who told me about the Hale Foundation. After meeting with Cliff Richards the Foundations Director I decided I needed to stay. I resisted at first, but pain is a great motivator and eventually I was willing to try it someone else’s way.

It is hard to cover all that I learned during my stay at the Hale Foundation. I was taught discipline, responsibility and how to be accountable. I had to learn the world doesn’t revolve around me and the good things in life can’t be found at the bottom of a bottle. I was introduced to the AA community in Augusta where I have found the greatest friendships I have ever known. After spending more then a year at the Hale Foundation I returned to my family. Though we may not have all the things the world says are important, we have each other. We thank God together every night for this.

What a blessing the Hale Foundation was for me and my family.  It was the place where the miracle happened in my life.  After 20 years of struggling with drug and alcohol addiction and on the verge of suicide, my recovery began here.  I have remained sober since coming to the Hale Foundation four and a half years ago.  I have a blessed life, and I am forever grateful for the work and love that goes on there.  I would recommend it to any man struggling with alcohol or drug addiction.

The Hale Foundation has given me a chance to learn how to live my life without drugs and alcohol, how to be a Dad, Son and Brother. My life has changed 180 degrees since coming to the Foundation. I could never repay The Hale Foundation for what it has given me and my family. Cliff tells a story and there is a line in it that sums it all up for me, it goes like this “stay where you are help is on the way” and that’s what I’ve done, and help came.

I often think about my life prior to my days at the Hale Foundation. I think about how untreated alcoholism put me in a spiral of anger, hate, and pain. I remember the hopelessness, the self-pity, and the emptiness that had overcame my existence. Alcoholism had taken everything from me. Family, friends, lovers, peace of mind, money, a place to live, driving privileges, freedom– name it, it was gone. I was seemingly at the point of no return. There was no light at the end of the tunnel. I had become everything that I said I would never be. I was resolved to accept the fact that I may be destined either to life in an institution or death.

Fortunately, however, I was pointed to the Hale Foundation by a dear friend who was, consequently, a former resident. At the Hale Foundation I was introduced to a group of men that cared deeply for my well-being, the 12 step program of Alcoholics Anonymous, and the loving network of Alcoholics Anonymous in the Augusta area. I learned how to get sober, how to live a structured life, how to stay sober, and that my best days of my existence lie ahead.

Now I look at my life after the Hale Foundation. I now have a loving relationship with my family. I have a large group of friends who sincerely love me and want the best for me. I now work as a professor at a major university while I am pursuing a PhD. Life is good! I owe a great deal of gratitude to the Hale Foundation for teaching me that there is a way out of the impending doom of untreated alcoholism and putting me on the path of infinite happiness.

I came to the Hale Foundation in 2008 and completed the program there. Prior to that time I could not stay clean and sober. The program and the things I learned in the 12-step program have allowed me to rebuild my family life and have a successful career.
